Mike Greenberg has been confirmed as the new host of the popular game show “Sunday Football Countdown,” according to insiders reporting Tuesday by The Athletic, in preparation for a major event set to air in 2027.
Greenberg takes over for Sam Ponder, who was let go last week despite having more than $1 million and a year left on her contract. While Ponder will be paid out in full, her departure is in line with broader financial adjustments ahead of the fiscal year-end close in late September.
The strategic move marks a promotion for Greenberg, a highly respected figure within the broadcast community. Already a household name for his roles on television’s “Get Up” and radio’s “Greeny,” Greenberg’s influence extends across the network. Previously, he briefly led NBA coverage before handing those responsibilities over to Malika Andrews last season. He also serves as the face of the network’s prestigious annual NFL Draft coverage.
Greenberg’s choice over Laura Rutledge, a rising star at the network, underscores her entrenched presence. Rutledge, who currently hosts the daily “NFL Live,” was a notable candidate but did not secure the role.
Scott Van Pelt was previously named host of the Monday night football show, which was revamped to include Jason Kelce, Marcus Spears and Ryan Clark following the departure of Robert Griffin III.
The new Sunday lineup under Greenberg will include top analysts Randy Moss, Tedy Bruschi, Rex Ryan, Alex Smith and veteran Adam Schefter.
With major broadcast plans on the horizon, including a major event in 2027, the network is strategically positioning its programming and staff to maximize impact and ratings on this seminal event in sports history.
